ITALIAN FOOD AS IT SHOULD BE
Gino D’Acampo’s My Restaurant is a little piece of Italy right in the middle of Harrogate.
It’s no secret that Italian’s love their food both sharing and savouring it in a relaxed atmosphere and this restaurant is exactly the place to do that.
It was a breezy and rainy summer’s day, just after the lockdown restrictions had been lifted when we visited. Although it was cold outside for the time of year, our welcome could not have been warmer – even the post Covid precautions were performed with finesse.
The interior of Ginos is light, airy and spacious and of course social distancing is observed but skilfully not spoiling the relaxed ambience. The picture below was taken long before social distancing was brought in.
A true Italian meal should always start with a selection of proper Italian breads and that’s exactly what we chose while we perused the enormous menu with a dish of Cerignola olives that were juicy and full of flavour.
The Grissini with Fennel was our favourite – the fennel gave it an added unusual kick whilst the Focaccia with cherry tomatoes and olives was a pure pleasure to eat along with the creamy pesto dip.
For our Antipasti & Bruschetta Course I couldn’t resist ordering my favourite Arancini – crispy mushroom risotto balls filled with mozzarella. It was and served a tomato and red pepper sauce that was simply bursting with tomato flavour and complimented the dish . The portion was enormous and cleverly presented in a tower formation. The risotto balls were crispy and full of flavour with the hot mozzarella soft and runny this was a very tasty dish.
My colleague chose the King Prawn Bruschetta. It was a light and simple starter that was spicey but not too spicey. The prawns were certainly large and served on two pieces of ciabatta The chilli mayonnaise was the perfect companion that gave the dish an extra kick.
For mains it had to be Sea Bass for me served with Italian Salsa and Lemon. The two large fillets of Sea Bass were perfectly cooked. The fish was succulent and flavoursome with the skin crispy as it should be. They rested on a base of Salsa with Lemon consisting of just about every favourite Italian vegetable you could imagine from all coloured olives, peppers, tomato, and so on with a strong fresh lemon flavour giving it an unusual edge.
Crispy Duck with a cherry and red wine sauce was my colleague’s choice. The crispy duck and the sweet cherry sauce were the perfect match. The sauce was not too sweet yet tangy and brought out the flavours of the meat and dispelled that often fatty taste that can come with duck. Again the dish was perfectly cooked crispy on the outside and moist on the inside – the meat just fell off the bone and runner beans were a perfect accompaniment to the dish.
We shared side dishes of Fries with Sea Salt, a simple mixed salad of Rocket Spinach, Tomatoes, Cucumber and Fennel that compliments any dish – but the side dish of my dreams was the Courgette Fries that have to be tried to be believed. They are awesome!
Our meal was enjoyed in typically in Italian style. We were not rushed and spent lots of time between courses catching up on lots of girlie gossip and were truly spoiled by the efficient and attentive staff.
Eventually we succumbed to desserts – it didn’t take much pressure. I chose Affogato it was my heaven on a plate. The home made vanilla ice cream was drowned in espresso coffee and served with amaretti biscuits. It was light and just the right to finish my meal.
My colleague was able to tackle the ultimate Italian dessert Tiramisu. The portion was more than generous and ticked every box. It was obvious that the ingredients were the traditional ones of fresh mascarpone cheese, proper espresso coffee, Savoiardi biscuits and all the other Italian goodies.
Ginos in Harrogate has facilities upstairs for private dining and a roof top bar named aptly My Prosecco Bar complete with high stools, sinkable soffas and skylights for a cheeky cocktails or fizz before you indulge yourself.
