RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP

Dating back from 1180 the hall has seen visits from Henry VIII, the birth of death of Henry Carey, and of course the location of the affair of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.
Along with an incredible history also comes the ghost stories too.
After lying derelict since the mid 1940’s Mosborough Hall was restored and made into a hotel in 1974. Now a 17th century Grade 2 listed building its gate and walls are also listed.
Mosborough is a brilliant place as a base for a staycation because its so near so many of the area’s attractions. Whether its shopping at Meadowhall or watching you favourite show or group in Sheffield or planning a walk in the nearby Derbyshire peak district.
If you fancy visiting a country house Chatsworth is 30 minutes away whilst a day out for the family is only 11 minutes away at Gullivers Valley Theme Park. If a spot of retail therapy beckons Meadowhall is 18 minutes away whilst the theatres and arena are only 18 minutes away.
After any of these activities or jaunts you can return to the peace and quiet of Mosborough Hall Hotel and its grounds and indulge yourself in a meal in the restaurant or just watch the world go bar from the glass fronted bar.
Enter the hotel and you will see a well thought out design where ancient has been planned to meet modern.
The ancient stone doorways that link the rooms downstairs have been cleverly integrated in the hotels design with the stone mullion window frames housing modern glass – giving a look back in time feel.
Mosborough’s bar has floor to ceiling windows and some great sinkable well designed sofas with great designed upholstery whilst the centre piece is its bar which is laden with just about every tipple you can imagine. Great for pre-dinner drinks or to put your feet up after or before dinner after a hard days retail therapy or visiting some of the nearby attractions.
Our room was exactly what you would expect it to be in a four star hotel with an ensuite with bath and integral shower. The room had a relaxing atmosphere and some modern artwork made it cheery.
The hotel’s restaurant Darcy’s is named after John Darcy a former son of Mosborough who in 1345 distinguished himself at the Battle of Cressy.
The restaurant has a definitive baronial hall atmosphere with polished wooden tables and the plus of sparkling glasses and white linen napkins or if you prefer more informal dining meals can be taken in the bar area.
There was a good choice of starters. My partners Garlic and Thyme Mushrooms came served with Brioche and Peashoots. It was a large portion, well grilled and not overly garlicky and the presentation was excellent.
My choice of Smoke Cheese and Sour Dough Rarebit however was disappointing. The dish was luke warm and had not been grilled for long enough – even after sending it back it was still not as it should be and no alternative offered or apology made. The pickled vegetable salad that accompanied it was however delicious and dressed well with a Balsamic matured dressing.
Not a pie eater – my partner was over the moon with his Steak and Ale Pie. The puff pastry lid was perfect and there was a dish full of tender steak with a thick and hot gravy and he added “You can taste a hint of ale in the pie”.
My Mosborough burger was smooth, tender and cooked well but again it was let down by the blue cheese dressing being luke warm and watery. I asked for a side salad which came on my plate not in a dish making the greens limp and I had to ask for the onion chutney.
However when it came to my sweet it was heaven on a plate. My Rocky Road Brownie with Ice Cream was a huge portion of sticky chocolate brown – one of the best ever I have tasted.
My partners choice of Apple and Mixed Berry Crumble however came chilled with hot custard on its side – the first time we have ever experienced this combination -I think the kitchen had forgotten to hot it up.
However Mosborough does a wonderful breakfast with the continental choice stretched out on an enormous antique table with beautifully presented choices that were fresh, flavoursome and really yummy.
Their Full English is a testament to fine cooking and the use of local suppliers again the finest you could want.
Mosborough has a certain charm about it that grows on you and a staff who are cheerful, exceptionally helpful and if they don’t know the answer to your query will certainly find out for you. The only downside is the lack of communication between kitchen and restaurant servers which I am sure was just a one off.
The hotel is the perfect alternative to staying in a city centre hotel when visiting Sheffield for entertainment, sporting events or retail therapy and the ideal place to base yourself if you just want to enjoy a couple of nights staycation.
