Liz Coggins finds out from one of the city’s top stylists, Francis Emechete, Senior Salon Director at the Sassoon Salon in Leeds

Summer can be a nightmare when it comes to hair. Holidays, weddings, summer balls, the races and other events mean we all need to look our very best hairwise and to achieve that our hair needs to be healthy.

“The key to sexy beach hair is great condition”, says Francis. “Intense sunshine, sand and salt water can take its toll, making hair dry and brittle” Francis recommends using a deep conditioning treatment such as Sassoon Professional Intense Restore to keep the hair looking healthy and glossy.

“If you plan to spend a full day in the sun you can apply it as an intensive hair mask before setting off to the beach. Comb into a high a high sleek ponytail or twist hair into a classic, chic bun”, says Francis. “The mask will seal in moisture while the style will complement an effortless beach look.” This product is a real multi tasker and a good investment as used weekly when you come back from holiday it ensures your hair returns to its optimum condition.

The perfect holiday hairstyle is one that is low maintenance, as its only the rich and famous who can fly their hairdresser out to their holiday destination to tend their tresses. “The soft beachy textures, seen at Phillip Lim, Burberry Prorsum and Diane von Furstenberg SS13 shows are low maintenance, on-trend styles that work perfectly at the pool, then the bar. They also look good for the races, weddings and look very chic but natural with the prettiest of prom dresses”, says Francis.

“To achieve this look, wet hair and divide into four sections. Braid loosely, and then leave hair to dry naturally. Once dry gently run fingers through the hair for soft, sexy waves. Finish with a little Sassoon Professional Diamond Polish to smooth frizz and flyways then lightly mist with Sassoon Professional Motion Hold for a flexible hold.

Francis’s Five Steps to Perfect Holiday Hair

Allow hair to dry naturally, instead of rubbing it dry with a towel. Air-drying hair will prevent breakage and cuticle damage, which maintains softness and combats frizz.

Add texture for a mussed-up look by twisting individual sections as hair dries.

After every dip, rinse out salt water and chlorine with fresh water, and then reapply a sun protection spray. Rinsing the hair will limit impurities from penetrating the hair cuticle and protect the hair’s moisture.

Following a beach or pool day, apply a leave in conditioner. It will make it easier to comb out the hair and prevent unnecessary breakage.

Sea water can lead to split ends so plan to visit the salon for a trim just before jet-setting away. A haircut will keep the ends healthy and super shiny.
