The Vanguard Renamed

10th May 2019: The family owners of innovative day-to-night café bar The Vanguard, which opened on Duncan Street in January 2019, are being forced to change the name of the popular venue.

The team, who also own Rolands and The Domino Club, has decided to let Leeds suggest a new name in exchange for free coffee for life* and £100 weekend brunch tab. Runner up suggestions will have the auspicious honour of being made into signature cocktails. The competition will run on (former) The Vanguard’s social media channels. The winner will be announced on 22nd May 2019.

The Vanguard is renowned for its innovative day-to-night moving back-bar which slides across turning from a daytime coffee shop to reveal a full-stocked bar at night. It has the only La Marzocco Modcar espresso machine outside London which sits under the counter (Harrods has one!) and serves Leeds’ North Star coffee.

The café-bar serves up lazy breakfasts using locally-sourced ingredients including perfectly poached Burford Brown eggs on sourdough toast, delicious lunches featuring the Best Reuben in Leeds and all finished off with an enticing range of evening small plates from Mac & Cheese Balls to Chicken Bon-Bons. This is supported with a unique cocktail menu offering favourites like their Breakfast Martini which mixes gin, marmalade, lemon juice and earl grey syrup.

Alexander Neil, co-director at The Vanguard said; “We’re sad to see The Vanguard change its name but it’s unfortunately out of our control. Vanguard means to lead the way in new ideas and that is exactly what the venue will continue to do. We’d love the clever people of Leeds to help us find a name that suits its experimental spirit and cool vibe. We’re proud to be based in Leeds and hope the new name will become part of the fabric of this great city. Oh, and there’s free coffee for life and a slap-up brunch as a reward!”

The Vanguard has become famous for its evening food and drink events which run twice a month and have gathered a dedicated following. Tickets for its monthly Evening of Yakitori sell-out almost instantly with lucky guests sampling a menu which celebrates Japanese-style charcoal barbeque known as Yakitori. A selection Yakitori skewers, tempura vegetables are served along with Japanese drinks including specially designed cocktails using spirits from Nikka distillery and beer provided by Asahi Brewery.
