The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool is playing host to a special 1940s weekend on September 30th and October 1st with events for history lovers of all ages. There will be chances to join the Home Guard, learn about the Allied forces, and see some of the military vehicles of the time, including the ship RML 497.
Events taking place across the quay at the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool will introduce visitors to the reality of life during the Second World War with living history displays. See and talk to members of the British military, alongside their vehicles and equipment vital for the frontlines across Europe and beyond. A weapon firing is also taking place at 1300 on both days. Younger visitors will also be able to join the Home Guard, and get involved in their very important drills, making sure they’re ready for whatever comes across the English Channel. Also on display for this special weekend is RML 497, a ship which embarked on rescue operations around the British Isles, now housed at the museum. Central to the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool is the iconic HMS Trincomalee. New interpretation onboard the ship will introduce visitors to the little-known story of Trincomalee’s time in the Second World War as HMS Foudroyant, helping train sailors in signaling and communications. This event is free for ticket holders to the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool. Climb onboard the oldest warship still afloat in Europe, HMS Trincomalee, learn about the intriguing world of maritime archaeology in the Diving Deep exhibition, and step back to the time of air raids, rations, and the Home Guard.
