All Bar One on East Parade was one of the city’s first trendy restaurant/bars to open decades ago. Over the years tastes and trends  in food and drink have changed but one thing has remained the same at All Bar One its varied and excellent menu of good quality dishes.

Although it was a Sunday evening, All Bar One on Park Row was quite busy. This establishment changes its mantle during the day from brunch and lunch to evening dining. The days bright lighting had been dimmed and candles lit giving the bar/restaurant a relaxed atmosphere.

All Bar One is synonymous with cocktails and always has been. So it was a must to scour the cocktail menu for our favourites. I was swayed by the Pink Grapefruit Collins being a gin lover and preferring a tangy cocktail. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. It was not over iced, as cocktails can be in so many city bars, and there were two big wedges of fresh pink grapefruit in the drink which was gin based with lemon and pink grapefruit topped with soda.

My colleague’s Mojito she declared was superb. She could really taste the rum and the mix of fresh mint, fresh lime, sugar and soda was perfectly balanced – real refreshing cocktail.

Whilst we looked at the menu we ordered from the nibble section of the menu. The pretzel Mix was particularly tasty as was the mixture of olives and we were really amazed the large size of the portions.

For starters we chose from the small plates menu and again the portions were more than ample. The pan fried king prawns were particularly delicious and cooked well. The tomato, chilli and paprika gave them a great taste whilst the baby kale and warm ciabatta made a good accompaniment to the dish.

The stone baked garlic flatbread was tasty and the Italian hard cheese dressing with the balsamic vinegar dressing added flavour. The texture of the flatbread was smooth and it was easy to cut or tear.

Halloumi fries can be a gamble at times. They are either too crispy or too soft and often the cheese is rather plastic-like. But these fries were excellent with a soft, but not too soft cheese and a crispy outside.

For mains we decided to choose  the healthy dishes on the menu. I decided on The Skinny – a handmade beef patty with only half a bun served with a avocado and house salad. The patty got full marks from me it was smooth and succulent and well cooked whilst the large salad was artistically put together with just about everything you could imagine in the bowl.

My colleague chose the Salmon Caesar Salad.  Salmon can be a tricky thing to cook as it can be slimy inside or over cooked and dry without any flavour – this was cooked to perfection.  The salad had everything that it should have including crispy cos lettuce, asparagus, croutons and a particularly tangy Caesar dressing with Parmesan cheese. Again the portion size was more than ample.

When it came to desserts we were at a loss so tempting was the choice. I opted for the Raspberry and Coconut Sorbets, one of the many vegan options on the menu. The sorbet was particularly flavoursome and served with fresh mint and raspberries.

My colleague decided on the Raspberry, Hazelnut and Chocolate Cheesecake, a dessert which has been specially created by their Head Chef at York. This was her ‘heaven on a plate’ with all the tastes complimenting each other and as a bonus it comes with a chocolate sauce.

Finishing our meal with one of their ethically produced coffees it was time to reminisces about  the times we had dined or had cocktails at this establishment over the years– and we both agreed as far as value, menu choice and the friendly, efficient staff who really make you welcome nothing had changed it was just still simply one of the best!
