Leeds Mencap

Recognised as Charity of the Year by the Yorkshire Society

Leeds Mencap

Local charity Leeds Mencap is delighted to have been recognised as Charity of the Year for the Yorkshire Society, a not for profit organisation which encourages businesses, charities and individuals to promote the Yorkshire region.
Leeds Mencap, an independent charity that supports 300 families with learning disabilities every week picked up the noteworthy award at the Society’s annual dinner and awards ceremony on Friday where Chair of the charity Martin Staniforth received the award from President of the Yorkshire Society Lord St Oswald and Chairman Keith Madeley MBE. Martin said “Leeds Mencap is proud and privileged to be the Yorkshire Society Charity of the Year for 2013 in what is our Diamond Jubilee year. As a small local charity we are heavily dependent on organisations and individuals to enable us to provide much-needed services for our users, both children and adults. This award is a real recognition of our work and will, I’m sure, help us to continue to raise the money we need to maintain and expand our services.”
The partnership was made between the Yorkshire Society and Leeds Mencap following a visit from Yorkshire Society Chairman Keith Madeley MBE following a visit to the charity. Keith said “the Yorkshire Society is delighted to acknowledge the wonderful work of Leeds Mencap particularly on their 60th birthday.” The Yorkshire Society is a non-political organisation that was formed in 1980 and encourages businesses, charities and individuals living or from all parts of Yorkshire to join together in promoting the county.
The award is particularly fitting for the charity which was set up in 1953 by families with learning disabilities upon the realisation of the lack of support for individuals with additional needs. In 2013 the charity celebrates its 60th birthday and has a whole range of celebrations going on from exhibitions at the Leeds City Museum to a charity bike ride and tea parties throughout the city.
