Celebrating the 70th Birthday of one of the finest jazz drummers of all time
Jack DeJohnette will be celebrating his 70th birthday in fine style this year with live dates across Europe and America and in the UK with a quintet that includes the brilliant reedsman Don Byron, plus Marvin Sewell (guitar), George Colligan (keyboard) and Jerome Harris (bass). In addition, a box in ECM’s Old & New Masters series will bring together four recordings by the great drummer’s group Special Edition from the early 1980s: Special Edition, Tin Can Alley, Inflation Blues and Album Album in a 4-CD box set called Special Edition, to be released on 3rd December.
In a career that spans over half a century, Jack DeJohnette has collaborated with a veritable who’s who of jazz giants including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock to name but a few. He has also worked with musicians outside the jazz canon, such as Foday Musa Suso, the innovative Mandingo Griot and master of the Gambian Kora. Throughout his career he has also maintained a long-standing relationship with ECM appearing on more ECM albums than any other musician; his numerous recordings for the label display his subtle, powerful playing and the “melodic” approach to drums and cymbals that makes his touch instantly recognizable.
Not only will Jack DeJohnette be celebrating his 70th birthday – earlier this year he was awarded a coveted Jazz Masters Award, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to advancing the jazz art form and for serving as a mentor for a new generation of young aspiring jazz musicians. On top of that, he also released a stunning new album, Sound Travels, a superb genre-spanning collection featuring yet another jaw-dropping array of collaborators.
