A menu full of tempting surprises

If you thought of Miller & Carter as just a steak house – then think again. It does provide a steak experience but its menu is loaded with choices from fish, pasta, chicken and salads, including some tempting vegetarian options.

It was a cold grey rainy night when we descended on Miller & Carter in The Headrow in Leeds. Cold outside it may have been but our welcome from our server couldn’t have been warmer. In fact during our meal the staff went that extra mile to make sure our every wish and whim was catered for.

Miller and Carter have an extensive easy to understand wine list which is very reasonable priced for the quality available. Our choice of Pinot Grigio Lacento was ideal. An uncomplicated, light and refreshing white wine it arrived well chilled as it should be.

When I read the menu I was surprised by the choice of dishes. For starters I had a vegetarian option of Baked Cheddar Mushroom and was highly delighted. This was not the usual concoction that is served with a runny sauce but fresh mushrooms coated with melted cheddar that was ideally cooked and served with garlic ciabatta.

My colleague chose the Sticky Chipotle Chicken – chilli glazed chicken bites with toasted sesame seeds served with a salad. The Balsamic dressed salad made a lovely contrast to the chicken. Both starters were generous in size and were just so tasty.

I opted for the Steak Experience choosing a 12oz Rib Eye which came cooked exactly to my liking – well done. It was succulent, tender and tasty. Miller and Carter have some exclusive dishes on their menu and one is the wedge dressing. My Stilton and Blue Cheese wedge dressing was a quarter of an iceberg each leaf interspersed with crumbled stilton and blue cheese and instead of steak sauce the British Beef Dripping Sauce – gravy just like granny used to make and tasting just as good. Included with the steak were chips, glazed beef tomato and a slice of their onion loaf – not giving any secrets away about the latter but it’s a must try if you step into Miller and Carter.

Tempura Hand Battered Lemon Sole was the choice of my colleague. Sole is very rarely battered so this is really one for the avid fish lover. This unusual dish was cooked just as it should be with a hot crispy batter. The tartare sauce it came with was obviously home made with added capers and accompanying minted crushed peas and fries added a traditional touch to the dish. After seeing my onion loaf my colleague ordered for some as an on the side dish her comment – delicious and unusual.

Sweets if you have  room left are to die for. My colleague’s Vanilla Bean Cheesecake was presented beautifully and covered in fresh fruit and tasted “as good as it looked”. Being an ice cream lover my Silverpail Ice Cream & Cookie wi

Miller and Carter is a comfortable place to dine in with very attentive and knowledge staff but it’s the menu surprises and the “home made” twists that are so pleasing making it much much more thank just a steakhouse
