And there's zero calories
Indulge in a guilt-free treat without the calories this Easter and soak in a dazzling bath of molten gold. And to seal an even sweeter deal, this luxurious golden egg is packed full of fairly traded, fully traceable cocoa butter from one Lush’s most extraordinary suppliers: the Colombian Peace Community of San José de Apartadó.
The Peace Community was founded in 1997, against a backdrop of violence and intimidation by the army, leftist guerilla fighters and right-wing paramilitary groups. A group of around 2,100 farmers pledged themselves to non-violence, as a result, the state has withdrawn all support, including mains electricity, schools and healthcare. The community has also become a target for those seeking control of their land; they have lost 261 members – men, women and children – as a result.
In spite of the ongoing conflict in the area, the people of San José de Apartadó. continue to live peacefully and grow and harvest cocoa beans. The community has developed ways of growing which incorporate permaculture techniques, such as mixed planting and composting, so they don’t need to buy pesticides and fertilizers. The farmers have also been working hard to breed a strong variety of native cacao from plants that are 100% organic. Lush is the main buyer of the community’s cacao, as paramilitaries often prevent them from selling their crop in Colombia.
