Liz Coggins finds the ultimate airport hotel
The Radisson Blu Hotel at Stansted Airport is like no other. In fact its unique.
As a seasoned travel writer airport hotels usually leave me cold! Even the luxury ones I find are a dreadful cacophony of activity and noise.
They are impersonal places with no atmosphere ,whose aim seems to process their guests as quickly as possible into their rooms, that is when you eventually get to the front of the interminable queues that stretch for ever. Then, eventually after negotiating miles of corridors that all look the same its into a stereo-typed room usually with lots of laminate and few facilities.
I have never found staying in an airport hotel a pleasant experience that was until I stayed at The Radisson Blu Hotel at Stansted Airport. It turned for me what I usually classed as a nightmare into a beautiful dream.
The Radisson Blu is Stansted’s only airport hotel that is only a short walk from the terminal and from the station so it’s so convenient – no waiting for those cramped buses or ringing reception for a pick-up that never comes on the first call.
Arrive at The Radisson and the sight of the towering glass facade will take your breath away. The planning of this hotel is perfection. No bright lights on long reception counters adored with plastic flowers and mints, but cleverly placed individual reception desks with plants and fresh flowers and lots of comfortable seating in the entrance area.
My check-in was a pleasant experience and then it was only a short walk to the plethora of lifts. The clever architecture of this building means no long corridors that seemingly lead to nowhere as the rooms are built round an atrium of galleries – amazing.
The rooms at the Radisson are luxury personified. Large windows, tasteful relaxing décor the perfect place to rest and rejuvenate.
My business class room had everything including slippers, a fluffy bathrobe, free in house movies and a most welcome Nespresso coffee machine as well as all the usual top hotels facilities including the most comfortable hotel bed I have slept on for years with crisp Indian cotton sheets. I had a perfect night’s sleep and I just never thought I was so close to an airport let alone in an airport hotel. I even savoured sitting in my comfy arm chair overlooking with twinkling lights of the runway.
My room included a super breakfast buffet but having a very early flight I thought I might have to go hungry as is the norm in your average airport hotel. But not at The Radisson. I ordered a cooked breakfast for 4.30am and it duly arrived on time cooked to perfection.
Dining can be exactly what you want it to be at the hotels three restaurants. The Fellini is ideal for a casual and relaxed Italian meal. But the crème de la crème is The New York Grill. Here you could be in any top class restaurant with its comfy seating, starched table covers and shining glassware and polished wood floor.
The New York Grill has an amazing menu with just about everything from venison and turbot to a delicious braised beef lasagne. This is the ideal place to start a celebratory get-a-way its quite a romantic place with an intimate atmosphere perfect for honeymooners or those who intend to jet away to pop the question.
But the ultimate jewel in the Radisson’s crown is the Angel’s Wine Tower in the circular style bar, that stretches to the top of the atrium. When a bottle of wine is ordered it is brought from the tower by Angels who perform amazing and impressive acrobatic feats whilst travelling in mid air to retrieve the bottle.
The bar area also serves a great selection of food including pizzas, salads, steaks and burgers tasty and beautifully presented.
If you have the time then visit the Fitness Centre or if you are slightly less energetic there’s an indoor pool, steam room and sauna.
The Spa is made for busy people who just couldn’t find time to get that last minute massage or manicure and is a great wind down place to enjoy a sneaky beauty treatment before you jet off on business or holiday.
The Radisson Blu at Stansted has certainly changed my idea of airport hotels and in my book there couldn’t be anything finer in which to relax, rejuvenate and prepare for your trip. Just can’t wait to fly from Stansted again so I can visit The Radisson Blu
