Have you ever looked at the name above a cosmetic counter and wondered if such a person exists or if they do who they really are?

In the case of Francois Nars does he really does exist and is one of the most celebrated makeup artists, photographers  in the world today. He is also founder and creative director of Nars – a cosmetic company established just over 25 years.

Nars was born and raised in the South of France. His  passion for fashion and beauty took him to the famous Carita beauty school  in Paris and an after apprenticeships with famous makeup artists of the time, the industry soon began to notice him.

It was the Polly Mellon, the then editor-in-chief of American Vogue that encouraged him to move to New York City where he instantly catapulted to success working for publications such as Vogue and Harpers Bazaar. He established collaborations with Karl Lagerfield, Marc Jacobs, D&G and Anna Sui for their runway shows and advertising campaigns followed for Versace, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.

A perfectionist at heart Francois became frustrated with the limitations of the cosmetic lines available to him and in 1994 he launched a collection of 12 lipsticks. The overwhelming demand for these inspired him to create his own full line of cosmetics and skincare.

His launch in 1999 of his Orgasm Blush became an instant cult favourite and became the best selling blusher in the world.  This year to mark the 25th anniversary he paid homage to the product that started it all with the launch of Iconic Lipstick – a 72 shade range collection.

Francois acquired his own island in French Polynesia, Motu Tane, known for its beauty and this has become a limitless source of inspiration for him.

A celebrated photographer who has appeared in the world’s leading glossy magazines and who has released a number of successful books over the years including a gripping photo-biography of his unique creative vision.

In 2016 Francois was made “Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur” the highest order bestowed by the French Government for military and civil merits who have made a remarkable impression on France and the world.
