A GEORGIAN DELIGHT IS NOT LOST

ITS FOUND IN ONE OF THE CITY'S BEST RESTAURANTS

A GEORGIAN DELIGHT IS NOT LOST

Restaurants come and restaurants go but The Lost & Found in Albion Place is firmly one of the city’s best and its most certainly here to stay.

The restaurant has an atmosphere and avant-garde feeling like no other because it’s part of the city’s history. Situated in a Grade 2 building that dates back to Georgian times The Lost & Found Leeds Club has a remarkable ambience and proudly displays a blue plaque on the outside as a testament to its remarkable history

Built as a private residence in 1820 in 1849 it was given a new facade and became an exclusive private gentleman’s club which it remained until 2013.

With the passage of time it still retains its beautiful 19th century interiors with high plaster carved ceilings and coved borders, a wide wooden staircase, a tiled floor and wonderful gold embellished marble pillars.

The restaurant has been carefully restored so as to lose non of its charm or history with potted palms, leather chesterfields and marble fire places.

Enter The Lost & Found Leeds Club and its like stepping back in time –  you expect to see an Edwardian gentleman sitting in one of the winged chairs, smoking a huge cigar and perhaps reading a copy of The Leeds Mercury.

On the lower floor is a large bar with lots of breakout areas that has a rustic feel or you can choose to sit in the former hall-way with its leather chairs. The lower floor also has a beautifully crafted restaurant with comfortable leather seating.

You can chose to sit in the window where the large windows overlook the street. There’s a real atmosphere of nostalgia with a large marble fire place, potted palms and a quirky tree in the middle of the room.

Yet the glory of the past is wonderfully retained with the beautifully original coving that wraps around the room.

.If you Climb the stairs  you will find another restaurant with large windows looking out to the street below still as beautifully nostalgic.

For starters I chose the Pork and Black Pudding Sausage Roll a I was fascinated by this menu item. This is a new take on the humble sausage roll that’s catapulted it into a new dimension. My sausage roll was every bit as delicious as its description said. The pork and black pudding was admirably placed in the hot crispy (and can I say non greasy) roll. The apple and plum ketchup it came with was a great additive as it brought out the flavour.

My colleague’s choice of Baked British Camembert did not disappoint. The Camembert was oozing with flavour and very tasty. The ideal accompaniment was the onion marmalade. The dish came with hot toasted sourdough bread and the Camembert was drizzled with honey – a tasty touch.

For my main I went for the pan-roasted Sea Bass. This was a very generous portion and the fish was cooked to perfection – succulent and moist. The crushed new potatoes just melted in your mouth and  were very flavoursome and the Tenderstem broccoli was the perfect accompaniment with a salsa verde butter going well with the new potatoes and greens.

Pan Fried chicken Breast at Lost & Found is like no other. It was tender and moist and a very very generous portion. The accompaniments were amazing for bringing out the flavour with sauteed potatoes, chorizo, spinach, semi dried tomato tapenade – to give it a zing and Tenderstem broccoli with a saffron aioli. My colleague was amazed just how tasty a dish this was and combined with Buttermilk Panko Onion Rings that were just divine with a crispy batter this was a veritable feast.

After a while we were ready to order our desserts and both of us were in total agreement that if there were Oscars for Desserts then these wonderful heaven on a plate desserts would be first in line.

I am usually not a lover of chocolate desserts but this I can honestly say was like no other I have tasted anywhere on my travels both at home and abroad.

I just was not prepared for what was being placed in front of me. Dark Chocolate Brownie – must have been created in the Angels kitchen. It just melted in my mouth. The brownie was hot and light it came with salted popcorn and cherry compote that diffused The any over richness of the chocolate and the accompanying chocolate and blood orange ice cream was just amazing.

My colleague described here Chocolate and Praline Torte as ‘solid gold’ with the tangy forest berry sorbet the perfect accompaniment.

The staff at Lost & Found are very knowledgeable and clearly love their workplace and product. Nothing was too much trouble for our server and always done with a smile.

The restaurant has special seasonal specialities that are limited edition so to speak from Maple Glazed Pork Chops to Oak Smoked Salmon(pictured below)  so its well worth checking out the menu before your visit. They also have a bottomless brunch available on Saturdays.
