Yorkshire Country Cricket Club: A Drop To Second Place

A 6 wicket defeat in the Championship to Somerset has finally seen Yorkshire slip from their perch as Division 1 leaders, but they remain in second place and with an excellent chance of their first County Championship title in nine years.

At home to Loughborough MCCU, Yorkshire predictably used the match to blood some young players and get some match practice for some of their reserves, Richard Pyrah (134 not out), Gerard Brophy (89) and Gary Ballance (43) all performing well in Yorkshire’s 348 for 5 declared. Ben Sanderson, with 5 for 50, was the pick of Yorkshire’s bowlers as the students were bowled out for 253, but with time already having been lost to rain Yorkshire batted out time at 29 for none in the 2nd innings as the match ended in a draw.

A win in the Clydesdale Bank 40 over the Netherlands followed, the Dutchmen making 200 for 8 with Tin Best (3 for 43) and Steve Patterson (3 for 34) the pick of Yorkshire’s attack. In reply Jacques Rudolph extended his purple patch with 83 not out as Yorkshire won by 4 wickets, though they only had 3 balls to spare after a late flurry of wickets.

However the trip to Taunton led to Yorkshire’s first loss of the season in any competition. In typically batsman-friendly conditions Yorkshire amassed 405 all out in their first innings, thanks primarily to a career-best 142 from Adam Lyth, with support from Joe Sayers (50) and Anthony McGrath (73). However Somerset replied with 377, Adil Rashid (4 for 85) and David Wainwright (3 for 48) leading the way for Yorkshire. 93 in the 2nd innings from the in-form Lyth, together with 83 from McGrath and 66 from stand-in captain Jacques Rudolph, enabled Yorkshire to declare at 333 for 4, after some declaration bowling from the home side, to set Somerset 362 to win. Alas Taunton’s flat wicket got the better of Yorkshire as Somerset’s James Hildreth, with 102 not out from just 70 balls, propelled his side to a 6 wicket win.
