Preview Art in Progress

We preview a new exhibition from Gretta Sarfaty Marchant at Leeds College of Art & Design

Preview: Art in Progress

Born in Athens to Italian, Greek and Turkish heritage, Gretta Sarfaty Marchant has lived and worked everywhere from Northern and Central America to Europe and back again. Her world travels and mixed background has clearly had an influence on her more contemporary visual work - particularly her photography and collages which deal in themes of identity and culture, although her art is not restricted just to the canvas.

Now residing in London, Gretta enjoys a formidable reputation on the international art scene through her work as the director of Sartorial Contemporary Art and as editor of The Rebel Magazine. ‘Gretta’s Progress’, her first all-encompassing collection, stops off in Leeds throughout December and offers a great retrospective of the multimedia artist in her many guises. Her work on display will stretch back to her years as a performance artist in the 1970s, right up to her more recent installations - like her ‘Last Supper’ carpet college, and her mysterious, veiled nudes from the 70s and 80s.

Promising photography, film and an “art opera pop musical”, Gretta’s exhibition promises to not only be a complete visual feast but also a walking and talking interpretation of the artist’s complete repertoire - a personal journey, and one with plenty of surprises.

Gretta will be in attendance for private viewings between 3rd and 4th December, explaining her exclusive work for the Leeds event, while the exhibition will be curated by Harry Pye, who has previously organised shows and events at the I.C.A and Tate Britain.
‘Gretta’s Progress’ runs from 3 December - 2 January at Leeds College of Art & Design
