Jaded city dwellers parched from the unrelenting summer sun and in the mood for a leisurely stroll around the lesser known parts of Leeds could do worse than a trip to The Regent. Based in the leafy suburb of Chapel Allerton, the pub boasts both pleasantly chilled out surroundings and a well pulled pint or two.
Chapel Allerton may not seem the most obvious venue for a bar that is about as traditional as a Sunday roast, yet huddled amongst boutiques that specialise in expensive greeting cards and delis selling chickpea and quinoa salads to Guardian readers, stands a truly British boozer that has been dolling out refreshments to the locals since 1800.
What exactly Robert Peel would make of little kids with names like Joshua and Brodie devouring falafel by their mother’s side as she recycles empty wine bottles from her biodegradable Amnesty International Bag For Life is another question entirely, but what is obvious upon entering The Regent is that the admirable cross section of muscled builders sipping pints of Tetley’s after a hard days graft, gossiping office workers and old boys replete in their Sunday best all enjoy the no nonsense finery the Regent has to offer.
The friendly bar staff oversee a good selection of local ales and bitters, as is de rigueur for any local Yorkshire pub worth it’s salt, whilst the beer garden provides a welcome respite from the comings and goings of Chapel Allerton’s bustling high street. A round of drinks won’t break the bank either, making The Regent a perfect jumping off point for an evening of revelry in the town’s many drinking dens or a grand spot to grab a few cheeky pints before partaking of the marvellous array of restaurants the area has to offer.
The Regent is undoubtedly worth a crafty punt during the long hot summer months when a pint of frosty beer becomes not simply a treat but a necessity for day trippers, shoppers and thirsty soaks alike.
