The deli counter in the new health store Millies Fresh & Organic is located right at the back, passed the nutritional supplements and aloe vera. You’ll also have to fight pass a fresh bread and cheese counter, too, which will no doubt be a struggle, particularly if you’re partial to the odd slice of Yorkshire Blue or Wensleydale, or practically any great cheese that you won’t find in a Morrison’s fridge. They even place handsomely diced samples in taster tubs for your delectation - a great way for you to get your chops around the sort of cheeses that you’d only find in a posh restaurant.
I digress, of course, because what I really want to talk to you about is pork pies. Giant ones, with stuffing on top and two types of meat. It may have been this very pie which pushed our Leeds Guide foodies over the edge at this year’s take away awards, in which Millies won the whole damn thing. The fact that everything they cook is home made from fresh produce available in store means that you’re not just chomping on the same processed palaver that you’d find on the shelves of all the big boys, who serve up sushi with plastic sporks and cover cubes of melon in cellophane. Millies make homemade soup, salads and great hot meals as well as the sort of sugary treats that surely contravene their standing as a health food store - awesome flapjacks and carrot cake stand alongside cod liver oil tablets and cous cous. Just don’t get them mixed up.
So, there’s something for everyone. We’re treated to the friendly charms of Millies resident bread butcher Leo Turner who serves up sterling sandwiches (mine is Cajun Chicken and salad, £2.40) and jacket spuds (with med veg and feta, £2.60) as well as a host of other delights. Their fabulous soups are only £1.75, while their freshly baked cakes are £1.50 (get them to make up an almond and praline one, it is exceedingly good), so not only are you eating well but your lunch won’t be burning a hole in your pocket.
We sincerely hope that little treasure troves like this aren’t kept a secret for too long. As well as offering nutritional and health advice, Millies offer a friendly, family run environment for you to eat healthily and feel good, because there’s nothing worse than sitting slumped on your keyboard by 2 o’clock feeling the heavy weight of a dodgy lunch. Just make sure you go easy on those cakes, folks.
