Lee Bell talks to Katrina Turnbull, store manager of Leeds' newest addition in the world of bags

Shop Profile: Radley

Originating from the streets of London in 1998, Radley have come a long way. Their success, which stemmed from the small markets of Camden town, has grown to see Radley become a treasured facet of the fashion industry. With the recent retirement of their founder and creative director Lowell Harder, Katrina Turnbull tells us why Radley have decided to come to the Victoria Quarter in Leeds, and how they are much more than the notorious Scottie dog which helped to make their name.

Why have Radley come to Leeds?
“The key idea was to get a Radley store in every major city in the UK. Now that’s been achieved, we can really take off. Radley has a substantial fan base and is really loved by people up north. We are a British born company and predominantly English designed, so it’s only right that we have a store here in Leeds.”

What are your thoughts about Radley’s move up north?
“I think it’s great. I already know that we have planned to expand to at least another 11 stores in the UK, giving us an opportunity to branch out even further and grow to smaller cities such as Newcastle and Middleborough.

How do you differ to other bag shops in Leeds?
“Unlike many other bag companies, Radley offer an affordable price for a really good quality bag. We use a very high standard of leather, so you get much more bag for your money. Then, of course, we have the dog. Though it is much more discreet these days, it is still there for those that love what Radley are about. We don’t just make bags that we think will sell - we have original ideas and go with it. The only trends we do follow are seasonal colours, making sure that our bags complement the current fashions.”

What’s in the pipeline for Radley?
“At the moment we’ve teamed up with the British Heart Foundation in aid of a Bag Amnesty promotion, which is running until the end of February. What this means is, if customers donate any of their unwanted bags to the charity, they will receive £30 off a brand new Radley bag worth over £100. Also, scheduled for March, we will be launching our new shoes range. We are very excited about this as it’s a brand new concept for the brand. Keep a look out for those!”
