Local MP Hilary Benn called in to Greenhouse to help the eco-friendly development in Beeston celebrate its first birthday. "Wow, wow, wow are the three words I’d use to describe what’s been achieved at Greenhouse over the last year," enthused the shadow leader of the House of Commons, as he spoke to the assembled crowd.
To mark its one-year anniversary, the development opened its doors to the local community on Friday 30th September and Saturday 1st October to celebrate what it dubbed ‘Eco-toberfest’. Market stalls were set up in the courtyard and tours were taken behind the scenes to show how energy is saved at the development, thanks to the incorporation of solar panels, rainwater being used flush toilets, and wind turbines generating the energy needed to heat shower water and power kettles.
Guests were also allowed to take a look inside Greenhouse’s apartments, offices and newly opened Apart-hotel to help show that living in an eco-friendly environment doesn’t mean having to give up the comforts of modern living. Addressing guests and members of Citu, the developers behind the project, Hilary Benn MP said: "You’ve shown green living can be done, as the greatest problem at the moment is people thinking that it can’t be done, thinking changing everyone’s lifestyle is too difficult. I say come to Greenhouse and see that it is possible, and it’s fun, and it’s successful."
As you might expect from an event that was named after the world famous German beer festival, ‘Eco-toberfest’ paid homage to Oktoberfest with some appropriately styled entertainment. There was Bavarian beer courtesy of Leeds bar The Bierkeller, Bavarian-style food from the Greenhouse deli and a live oompah band.
The occasion was also used as an opportunity to launch Greenhouse’s latest project, an initiative to grow its own forest. Visitors across both days were asked to get involved, with 60 people agreeing to adopt a tree for the ‘Greenhouse Grove’ that will be cultivated for the next 100 years.
Chris Thompson, managing director of Citu, said: "The Eco-toberfest celebrations proved an opportunity for people who came to the launch a year ago to see how the Greenhouse residents and office tenants have built a sustainable community over the last year and to welcome new faces through the door who wanted to see what Greenhouse is all about."
