Preview Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The post-punk art-rock New Yorkers return to Leeds for the start of their UK tour

Preview: Yeah Yeah Yeahs

As 2009 draws to a close, one of the decade’s most influential American bands returns to Leeds for a much-anticipated gig at the Academy.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are nearing their own decade, and it is fair to say that had they not formed in 2000, the British music industry might not be what it is today. Their arty New York brand of post-punk translates extremely well over here, and only their close predecessors the Strokes have made a similar impact on the contemporary music scene.

A modern-day Blondie with extra helpings of eccentricity, Karen O’s inimitable frenetic stage persona and wildly astonishing vocals have helped her to place women firmly back in the upper echelons of music.

Along with guitarist Nick Zimmer and drummer Brian Chase, the trio have come a long way since emerging onto our consciousness with Fever to Tell, following that up with the career-defining Show Your Bones and this year’s It’s Blitz!.

If you were present at this year’s Leeds Festival, you’ll know that their live shows are something to behold and the threesome show no signs of waning. Enjoy tracks from all three studio albums when they kick off their UK tour in this very city.

29 November, the Academy, 7pm, £20
