It will be a sad day for fans of impenetrable, rhythmical, insensible noise everywhere when the Leeds band White Boys For Gay Jesus play their final Leeds show on Saturday 6th February.
Within the four walls of the Packhorse pub on Woodhouse Lane, the disturbing and inimitable sound of these five boys, will be heard for the final time.
Never shying away from controversy, the surprisingly slick metal heads will play greatest hits from their back catalogue: ‘White Boys For World Wide Idiocide’, ‘White Boys For Black Lizzy’ and the latest William Burrows-inspired filth fest that is ‘White Boys For Brothel Med Clinics’.
White Boys, who formed in 2004, describe their music as combining a myriad of proggy influences: “At the nasty end - Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah, Mike Patton and Nostromo, at the ‘nice’ end Boards Of Canada, Battles and Fortet.” Guitarist, Aids, says: “The result is a challenging, technically proficient mix of distortion, glitch and melody.”
Never shying away from controversy, White Boys change their name for each gig, choosing to play under a plethora of dubious political paradox, such as White Boys For Mandatory Abortion, White Boys For Punk Rock Capitalism and a couple of others so outrageous they couldn’t possibly be recorded in a respectable publication such as this…
Perhaps all this should come as no surprise from the five men who posed naked on the cover of Sandman Magazine a couple of years ago, Christ-esque, with wooden crosses hiding their modesty.
But, apparently, some thought goes into these antics. When asked about how they came up with the band name, guitarist Pretty Boy explained: “We were very aware that metal is played predominantly by middle class white boys whose dad was rich enough to buy them an electric guitar. So the name was just about being self aware. But we couldn’t just call it White Boys because we’d sound like a white supremacist band - so we juxtaposed something that white supremacists were typically pretty into - Jesus - and something they very much weren’t - being gay.” Well, we hope that makes sense to you…
They only charge white men to attend their gigs, letting any other demographic into the show for free in the hope of “increasing social diversity”.
The final White Boys For Gay Jesus tour will see them rock out to five beardy men in Wigan on 5 February, Leeds Packhorse 6 February, Manchester 7 February, Huddersfield 8 February, Sheffield 9 February, Dundee 12 February and Edinburgh 13 February. They’ll then go away for ever and do something more sensible
