There is a strong musical pedigree coming out of the Scotland this year. The ground has been cleared and path established in bulk by the carefully laid footsteps of Idlewild, the pop sensibilities of Glasvegas, the ruckus party punk of Dananananaykroyd and the somber and epic tones of The Twilight Sad (we could continue this list but I’ll stop here).
2009 has seen the emergence a number of cult Scottish bands from folksters Broken Records to indie kids Copy Haho, and now we have the super, although long awaited, releases from straight up indie rock boys We Were Promised Jet Packs.
The four-piece formed in Edinburgh back in 2003 by high school friends Adam Thompson (guitar/vocals), Michael Palmer (guitar), Sean Smith (bass) and Darren Lackie (drums) and have since gained some high profile muso fans including Frightened Rabbit who described them as “the best pop band you don’t know” - an accolade most Scottish bands can only dream of.
In essence, WWPJ will give you strong songwriting of fast carefree rock with big sing along tunes mixed up with the classically Scottish vulnerable intertwining vocals. Playing live they also have the ability to excel in the acoustic sphere as well. Their debut single ‘Quiet Little Voices’ is a song that has anthem quality and is not to be missed, other highlight songs to check out include the delicate ‘Keeping Warm’.
This band will particularly please established fans of both Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad.
