Compelling, inventive and exciting, Trichotomy are much more than your traditional jazz trio. One of Australia’s most inventive contemporary music ensembles, their music draws on a range of influences, from the avant-rock of Radiohead, to ECM minimalism. They blend dense and somewhat exciting improvisations with more delicate atmospherics, to create innovations that might recall the likes of EST or Tord Gustavsen.
Formed as Misinterprotato in 1999, their unique sound is driven by award-winning pianist Sean Foran, expansive, dynamic percussionist John Parker and double bassist Patrick Marchisella.
The three members met whilst studying at the Queensland Conservatorium, and in 2007 Foran was awarded the Brisbane City Council’s Emerging Artist Fellowship. This enabled him to relocate to the UK, where he received an MA in Jazz Performance from Leeds College of Music in 2008.
2009 saw Sean selected as one of the winners of Australia’s prestigious Professional Development Awards for song writers and this concert forms part of a tour in support of the trio’s new album.
Trichotomy will conjure up sounds of modern jazz, free improvisation and contemporary classical music in what should be the perfect start to 2010’s concert season.
