Preview Three exhibition

The merging of minds from a trio of Leeds artists

In the exhibition, the three artists look at the idea of the self and identity. They say they wanted to "explore the effect the world has on us as individuals"

A new exhibition by three Leeds-based artists – which came about because of a “chance encounter” – is launching at Red Eric Studios on Friday 10th September for one-weekend only.

Featuring paintings, drawings and sculpture, the exhibition titled Three, showcases the work of Helen Barlow, Beth Gadd and the anonymous Artistree, who met by chance. In the exhibition, the three artists look at the idea of the self and identity. They say they wanted to “explore the effect the world has on us as individuals”.

One of the artists, Helen Frances Barlow, says she draws her inspiration simply from “humanity”, and has developed a unique style of painting and drawing to express her observations on human life. She also works with found and unwanted materials, with the intention of provoking debate about how much we throw away or waste.

Artistree is an anonymous female artist, described as “a figment of her own imagination”. She popped up from nowhere to participate in Three with Helen and Beth and will probably pop back into nothingness when it is done. “Nothingness is, after all, where she is most comfortable.” Her art is a very personal process and is how she expresses the jumbled contents of her head – that otherwise will become a confusing mess of white noise.

Beth Gadd is a Leeds-based visual artist, working in 3D, who explores what makes us human. Influenced by the writings of Julia Kristeva, she says she often looks into “the darker side of our minds”. Beth favours abject materials, including wax and latex, and often experiments with less traditional mediums. “The prospect of working with strangers was too good to miss, and I’ve already learnt so much from Helen and Tree that has made me really think about my own practice,” she says.

Each of the artists will donate a percentage of their profits to charity. Helen has chosen to support PWSA, because her nephew, Jack Thomas, who lives in Australia, suffers from PWS (Prader-Willi Syndrome). Helen says that “donating is an important part of Helen’s work as it enables her to help from so far away”. Artistree will be donating proceeds from any sales to MIND. “With one in four people likely to experience a mental health problem every year we could probably all use their help!” And Beth will be donating proceeds to the St Gemma’s Hospice where she’s worked. She has seen how much they help people living with a terminal illness and chosen to donate a portion of profits to help them to continue the incredible work they do.

Three will run from 10th – 12th September at Red Eric Studios and the launch party will feature live music and free refreshments.
