Preview The Neil Cowley Trio

BBC Jazz Award Winners to perform at Leeds College of Music

Preview: The Neil Cowley Trio

There are many highly acclaimed capacities in which you might find Neil Cowley. As the keyboard player for Zero7 and the Brand New Heavies springs to mind. Or perhaps as the man who’s just recorded piano and organ for Adele’s debut album, 19. And not forgetting the Neil Cowley Trio.

Recorded on his own label, the trios debut album Displaced features a collection of outstanding original recordings which have seen Cowley labelled as a “dazzling pianist” and “stunning composer” as a result. The album received huge (and we mean, huge) critical acclaim, going on to win the Best Album at the 2007 BBC Jazz Awards.

Witty, dynamic, original and yet still totally accessible, it is easy to appreciate how the trio, also featuring Evan Jenkins on drums and Richard Sadler on bass, have made a name for themselves. With a combination of catchy hooks, soulful moments and thrilling climaxes, the band place emphasis on shorter tracks with high levels of funk and energy. No wonder, then, that the Observer recently described the trio as having “pledged allegiance to the dance floor.”

The Trio’s second album, Loud, Louder…Stop! was released in March on the new indie record label Cake. It incorporates even more diversity and wider-ranging influences - but still proves just as exciting. Gracing The Venue on 9th October, this evening should set the standard for jazz to come in the college’s Autumn concert season. Definitely a treat not to be missed.
