When winter starts to draw in and the weather gets frosty, a dose of The Library‘s rip-roaring comedy should warm you up nicely. With a whole host of top comedy names performing at the venue this autumn and winter, there should be something to suit all comic tastes. And with a mere 150 tickets available for each show, guests are in for an up close and personal affair with their favourite comedians. A great setting with a buzzing downstairs bar and low-priced drinks, along with the all-important gig venue upstairs, tickets can sell out fast, as seen this summer with sell-out shows from the likes of Michael McIntyre and Russell Howard, no less.
Kicking things off on 12th October is south London ‘geezer’ Lee Nelson, fresh from ‘Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show’ on BBC3. If you prefer something a bit more alternative, you might want to check out Andrew O’Neil, the self-acclaimed “heterosexual transvestite”, with his show ‘Occult Comedian’ on 18th October.
Next is the first of three females performing at the venue in the autumn/winter season, with Sarah Millican hosting two nights of ‘Chatterbox’. You may recognise Millican from appearances on TV comedy shows or from her Radio 4 series ‘Sarah Millican’s Support Group’. Tickets are almost sold out for this, her first national tour, so you’ll need to move fast.
Onward to 25th October and another well-known TV face, Isy Suttie, comes to Leeds. Best known for playing Dobby in ‘Peep Show’, she juggles being a stand-up comedian, writer and actress and has worked as ‘comedy consultant’ for the popular Channel 4 show ‘Skins’.
Then, on the following night you have the chance to see Paul Zerdin, one of the world’s foremost ventriloquists who first came to our screens when he won ITV’s ‘The Big Talent Show’ hosted by Jonathan Ross. A regular at the Royal Variety Show, his ‘Sponge Fest’ show has gained widespread popularity.
Guitar-playing Rob Deering is first to grace the Library stage in November, as he’s in town on the 15th. The comic has headed all the major clubs in Britain and has featured in several radio shows, most recently Radio 2’s ‘Out to Lunch’. Then on 16th November, the excellent Alun Cochrane takes to the stage with ‘Jokes and Stories’, his self-explanatory show title. A down-to-earth Yorkshireman who gets inspiration from things he sees on the street, the kitchen or practically anywhere, Cochrane comes highly recommended.
On 17th November it’s Greg Davies’ turn. Notable for his statuesque height of 6ft 8in and his not insignificant size 16 feet, he’s a regular on the television and radio show circuit, with roles in ‘We Are Klang’ and ‘The Inbetweeners’ his most well known. His show, ‘Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog’, is his debut tour and it’s being tipped to help establish him as a top class stand-up. Josie Long then calls into The Library on 29th November. Long has performed consecutive spring tours and is fast building up a stellar reputation on the stand-up scene.
As we do the last of our Christmas shopping (or as some of us begin…) Jim Jeffries is the final comedian of the season. You may strangely know him for being attacked on stage while performing at the Manchester Comedy Store in the early part of his career. The brash Australian is now a recognisable name in the US after a hit special on HBO and he’s looking to make that transition over here.
With soaring levels of demand for top stand-up comedy tickets, you probably want to book pretty sharpish to ensure you get your seasonal comedy fix as the dark nights draw in.
