Preview Steve Mason

The former Beta Band man comes to the Brudenell on 19th August to showcase his stripped-back new material

Preview: Steve Mason

The Beta Band are perhaps best known as the band who, upon releasing their debut album, declared that they thought it was shit, and also from the soundtrack of the film of High Fidelity, in which Rob, played by John Cusak, puts on their song ‘Dry The Rain’ in his record shop, while confidently declaring “I will now sell five copies of The Three E.P.‘s by The Beta Band”. And he does, you know.

It’s been some six years since the band split up, and in that time band founder and vocalist Steve Mason has worked under the monikers King Biscuit Time and Black Affair.

Mason’s most recent album, May’s Boys Outside, released via Domino Records’ Double Six imprint, is his first under his own name and sees him taking a much more straight forward approach to song writing.

While Mason’s previous works have been predominately electronic-based, Boys Outside sees him working with massive pop producer Richard X (whose previous projects include Sugababes, Liberty X, Kelis and Javine) and creating a predominately acoustic album that relies almost solely on the quality of the song writing.

Thankfully, Mason is quite the song-writer, and his new songs – often sombre, heartbreaking, or just damn troubling – are based around simple guitar and piano melodies with a little electronic layering courtesy of X.

His date at the Brudenell will be a great opportunity to hear these very personal songs in a very personal setting. Not one for those who feel easily unsettled.
