Preview Slam Dunk 2010

A look ahead to a Leeds punk festival that's bringing its noise down South

Preview: Slam Dunk 2010

Good news for fans of the heavier side to rock music. Slam Dunk 2010 will be bringing rock, metal, punk, emo, ska and everything in between right to our door step.

Across the May bank holiday weekend the festival will be touring the country, stopping in Bournemouth and Glasgow with mini festivals, and hosting two main full day event in London, and then Leeds on Sunday 30th May.

The Leeds all-dayer will be based at Leeds University Union, where over 40 bands will play across seven stages to around 5,000 people – and 2010 sees some of the best acts yet.

Following the release of their sixth studio album Not Without a Fight early last year, New Found Glory are taking the headline spot with their pop punk, taking influence from the punk revival of the 1990s – think NoFX, Greenday and Blink 182 – and expect a hi-octane performance with cutting humour.

Another band on the bill that have set tongues wagging are Capdown. Having split up in 2008 after a number of final tour attempts, the punk world accepted their demise as band members took up new musical projects. In a surprise move, they’ve decided to reunite once more, exclusively for Slam Dunk 2010, bringing their political ska punk to the Leeds audience.

Finally, a new band also well worth a look in area Sheffield kids Rolo Tomassi. Don’t be alarmed by the innocent looking face of front lady Eva Spence, she is more than capable of sharing a festival stage with the likes of Alkaline Trio. Fresh from a world tour they’ll be fit to rile any festival crowd. In a nutshell this band are an eclectic mix of math meets metal with shrieks and murmurs through the vocals; this gig will be furious and very, very loud.

Slam Dunk 2010 takes place on 28-31 May, tickets are £25. The Leeds date is on 30 May at Leeds University Union, Woodhouse Lane, LS2 9JT, 0113 380 1400. To find out more visit www.myspace.com/slamdunkclub
