It’s been a rapid rise to fame for Russell Howard since he decided to embark on a career in comedy. Performing his fifth ever gig when aged just 19, he reached the final of Channel 4’s ‘So You Think You’re Funny?’ stand-up competition, and from there he’s gone on to establish himself on the live comedy circuit and more recently as a regular face on TV panel show ‘Mock The Week’. He’s also presented on BBC 6 Music, appeared on various other panel shows, enjoyed sell-out Edinburgh Festival performances and national tours and released a DVD. Not bad going.
So what can you expect from his latest stand-up show, Dingledodies, which calls in at the Grand Theatre this fortnight? Well, he’s preoccupied with life’s peculiar characters and the comedy that surrounds them. But this is no snidey, playground bully style of comic delivery; Howard sees the joy in life’s many strange forms and he’s out to spread happiness, not ridicule. He often backs up his amusing silly tales by physically bounding about the stage, meaning that his style might not suit your palate if you’re a connoisseur of deadpan one-liners.
But, with a large bank of good material and bags of infectious enthusiasm, you might just find yourself being carried along on the upbeat ride. And it’s always interesting to see ubiquitous TV faces doing what made them well known in the first place, and performing outside the constraints of the predictable and rather tired format of the panel show. So now’s your chance to try for a last-minute ticket to see a successful comedian delivering a critically-acclaimed show right here in Leeds.
