This night is all about Rock, and just so you know that should always be pronounced “R-A-W-K”, and preferably while raising devil horns in the air in salute to the beefy axe-based tunes that you will hear at Rio’s on Saturday nights. The venue in the Grand Arcade is home to this stylishly scuzzy event every week and it is always filled to the rafters with rockers, booze and loud music – like a miniature version of the Titty Twister from Dusk ‘Til Dawn – just without the vampires.
From the delta blues to the evolution into 50s rock‘n’roll, rock music has had an irresistible pull on people of all ages, backgrounds, star signs and heights. There is something about a searing riff that can just absorb you and the next thing you know you are head-banging to Motorhead with a quadruple JD in each hand – at least that’s the kind of thing that goes on at Rio’s.
Every Saturday DJ Ziggy and friends play the most uproarious classic rock, glam, metal and other crunchy, heavy genres to a crowd who are treated to these tunes, as well as a tantalisingly cheap selection of boozes. A measure of Jack Daniels, or syrupy and sinister Jagermeister cost a mere £1.50 each and bottles of beer start at £1 – these prices are almost irresponsibly low, but not quite!
If you reckon you’re a real rocker then liberate your hair from that restrictive pony tail, don your leather jacket and stomp your way down to Rio’s this Saturday for a night of music, booze and general debauchery.
Saturdays, Rio’s, 11pm-4am, £4
