Keith Allen & His Band gig in support of the Leeds refuse strike

As you surely know, the refuse strike is top local news at the moment. Will our rubbish ever be collected again, or are we doomed to a future living upon a putrid plain of black plastic bags, where rats will grow to the size of dogs? Perhaps not if Leeds Council and the trade unions can resolve the issue soon in their current negotiations, which the Yorkshire Evening Post are calling “peace talks”. No over-dramatising there, then.

Either way Keith Allen And His Band are playing a gig in support of the strike at Leeds Academy, wittily entitled Refuse To Be Beat. The actor, comedian and musician has always been highly politicised and now he is coming to the aid of Leeds’ bin men with a little aural entertainment to help raise support for their cause. Keith has been part of several musical combos in the past such as Fat Les, which included friend Damien Hirst and Blur bassist Alex James. He has also performed with New Order on a number of occasions and The Happy Mondays once when he did a Bez by dancing on stage with the band.

This event is hardly the Concert For Bangladesh but Allen has always been an absorbing entertainer and maybe (we can but hope) it will help end our current garbage crisis.
