The biggest and brightest talent from cultural and artistic organisations based in Leeds’ thriving Quarry Hill area are inviting the public to come and tread the boards at the free one-day Quarry Hill Festival on Saturday 2nd July.
Based at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the festival will offer visitors tours, performances and workshops so they can try their hand at some of the city’s best-loved artistic ventures.
Organised by the Quarry Hill Creates partnership, the festival will showcase some of the great variety of creative flair in the city. From behind-the-scenes tours and radical theatre workshops to bhangra lessons and a Rockschool, it will provide opportunities for Leeds residents to reveal their hidden creative side and gain a rare insight into the heart of the city’s artistic community.
Wieke Eringa, chief executive officer and artistic director of Yorkshire Dance, said: “This is the first time all our organisations have worked together to show that Quarry Hill is a fantastic place to visit: it is unique in the whole of the UK to have so many different places to enjoy your own creativity and be inspired by the talent of others, be it in theatre, design, singing, dance or even television!
"We hope people of all ages and communities will come and hang out with us and sample all the free workshops, performances and arts market, or simply join in for some tasty food and atmosphere.”
Northern Ballet, Quarry Hill’s newest resident and semi-finalist in a 2011 National Lottery Award, is one of the organisations taking part. Chief Executive Mark Skipper said: “We are thrilled to be involved in the Quarry Hill Festival, and excited to be welcoming the public into our new home for the second time this year. It is fantastic to be part of such a vibrant creative community and to have the opportunity to collaborate with our partners on Quarry Hill.”
The festival is the first major event of its kind since the launch of the Quarry Hill Creates initiative in October 2010 - a partnership of over 14 local creative organisations - and has been organised in conjunction with the West Yorkshire Playhouse’s 21st birthday celebrations. It aims to raise the profile of this artistic area, work collaboratively on new projects and share resources and expertise to strengthen the organisations’ role in the region.
2 July, Quarry Hill Festival, 10am-6pm, free entry
