JM Barrie’s story of the boy who wouldn’t grow up has captured the imaginations of fans the world over. From the Disney animation, to Hook and 2004 Barrie biopic Finding Neverland, through to the fan groups on Facebook and mass pilgrimages made to Kensington Garden’s Peter Pan statue, the story’s timeless themes of innocence and immortality strike a cord with all.
This fortnight the Northern Ballet Theatre’s interpretation returns to the Grand. Following the company’s A Christmas Carol, running till the 10th, and their 40th anniversary gala performance on the 12th, Peter Pan marks a busy time for the Leeds troupe. But that doesn’t look set to inform their performance at all. Peter Pan is a physically challenging, high flying, aerial wire spectacle.
Such theatrical big-stage performances are what NBT do best - although those who only see them at Christmas are missing out on some impressive mixed bill works through the year - with a dedication to every part of the experience. Big budget scenery, audacious costumes - designed by NBT artistic director and choreographer himself, David Nixon - and a live score by Oscar-winning composer Stephen Warbeck support the dance and ensure that Peter Pan enthusiasts, ballet fans and first-timers alike will be impressed by this NBT favourite.
