Preview Leeds Mencap Fabulous Fifties Ball
Charity Prepares for Swinging Shindig
Polka-dot dresses and blue suede shoes will make a comeback later this year, as a Leeds-based charity is swinging in to action with plans for a ball with a difference.
Leeds Mencap’s Fabulous Fifties Ball will be held on Saturday 13 October at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, with all proceeds going to Leeds Mencap – a locally funded charity for children and families with learning disabilities.
Those attending the event are encouraged to dig out their dancing shoes, as they will be accompanied for the evening by the Leeds University Union Dance band.
Organisers hope to attract more than 200 guests to the event in Leeds Met, which will also boast a three-course dinner, an auction and a raffle with lots of great prizes.
Chief organiser of the event Carola Sharpe says that the event is a great opportunity to help get the word out about Leeds Mencap.
“This is the fourth year of the Leeds Mencap ball, and we are very excited to announce a fun “fifties” theme – it is a chance for everybody to dress up in some of their favourite vintage fashions.
“Leeds Mencap does a lot of great work for families in and around Leeds, and this is a fantastic way for people to show their support for a worthy cause.”
Last year’s Leeds Mencap ball raised more than £10,000 and the charity’s CEO, Frank Plumbridge, wants to build on last year’s good work.
He said: “I am pleased that preparations for the ball are firmly underway, as it is an important source of funding for our charity.
“We wouldn’t survive if it wasn’t for the generosity of the individuals who help fund us, and these events are a great way to help promote what we do.”
Ticket prices are £55 per person or £500 for a table of 10. The price includes welcome drinks, a three-course meal and entertainment.
