Iceland may have fallen foul of a few errors these past few years, but where they have excelled is in some of the music they’ve turned out. With a minute population of just over 300,000 they’ve given us Björk, Robyn, Johann Johannsson and Sigur Rós.
And from the ashes of Sigur Rós the ethereal falsetto workings of lead man Jónsi have emerged in a solo project and gained critical acclaim. After some one off collaborations, Jónsi went full throttle into writing his solo material, delighting fans of his uniquely whimsical world with a fresh LP entirely sung in English – a risky step away from the mystery of his made up language for Sigur Rós.
In April of this year came Go, his debut solo album released on XL Recordings. Produced by Peter Katis, who has also work with Interpol, Fanfarlo and on the recent Frightened Rabbit LP, Go is swathed in drousy folky cinematic arrangements. His flighty vocals meander across swells of dramatic movements thundering underneath. Critics described it as pristinely gorgeous, striking, glacial and more other such otherworldly descriptions. In essence this record is the sort of work you might expect from the lovechild of Björk and Thom Yorke.
With the record in tow Jónsi is touring extensively this autumn. Live shows will be tear jerking, epic and unforgettable, and should include quirky illustrative animations to support this one man experience.
