“The Big Apple’s best-kept secret”, and probably the new saviour of contemporary songwriters only has a couple of dates this side of the pond this summer, and a trip to one of Wakefield’s cooler venues should therefore definitely be on the cards.
Jeffrey Lewis has been making waves in the UK since 2001 with the release of his debut album on Rough Trade, and collaborations with Kimya Dawson and Diane Cluck only serve to add to his cultish following. Gentle plucked guitars give way to convoluted half-spoken lyrics and influences ranging as wide as Leonard Cohen to Daniel Johnston to The Fall.
Lewis has been fascinated with reading and drawing comics all his life, and in 1998 he began selling them packaged with homemade cassettes of early work. A recommendation from The Moldy Peaches saw attention from Rough Trade and a decade’s worth of incessant touring with a sometimes lo-fi or sometimes sci-punk set followed. Lewis’ younger brother Jack began playing electric bass and contributing to the shows and tapes.
Support comes in the form of Bear Driver and Runaround Kids, we recommend getting down early to watch Salvage My Dream. Robert Fisher’s multi-layered lo-fi can completely beguile or utterly animate.
