The Huddersfield Laughter Lounge at the Peacock welcomes two distinctly different acts this month, offering tunes with a comedy twist and irreverence with an international flavour.
Duncan Oakley is less one-man show and more ensemble act, bringing with him an array of musical chums. Always accompanied by one of three guitars – Maurice (Fender Strat), No. 7 (acoustic) or The Lezza (Les Paul) – as well as occasional drums, piano and harmonica, Oakley mixes observational comedy with well honed musical skills and more than a dash of cheek. A veteran of the stand-up circuit with 10 years of gigging under his belt, Oakley entertains with songs about everything from a pet fly that starts a band, to a girl with a bum for a face. His songs pick up on life’s silly, rude, irritating and playful situations, and promise to have you “humming a tune with a smile on your face three days later, confused and wondering where it’s come from”.
Also appearing is irreverent Aussie comic Kent Valentine. Combining “the unbridled passion of Brendan Burns and the easy, affable charm of Adam Hills”, Valentine’s dynamic style and enthusiastic optimism has secured him a reputation as a top performer on the Australian comedy circuit. His current solo show, ‘Fablemonger’, secured a nomination for the Australian Comedy Review Critics Award 2010 and won the Fringe Award for Comedy at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in June, as part of the (slightly inaccurately titled) ‘British Invasion’ showcase. Gaining momentum and promising to walk you through “chivalry, morality and the accidental shooting of civilians”, Kent Valentine may be a name to watch out for.
Topping off the evening with a guest act and compere, the Huddersfield Laughter Lounge kicks off at 8.30pm prompt. With only 85 seats, this intimate club fills up quickly, so book in advance to make sure you don’t miss out.
