Preview Glamourie Exhibition at Project Space Leeds

Contemporary northern art talent set to impress at new exhibition

Preview: Glamourie Exhibition at Project Space Leeds

Since it was founded in 2006, Project Space Leeds has showcased some of the most innovative and creative talent around through various forms of art including talks, seminars and education workshops, as well as a vibrant exhibitions programme. Its aim is to place Leeds on the national and international radar by featuring both local artists and those from further afield.

‘Glamourie’ is the latest exhibition to be shown at PSL and it features work from 26 northern contemporary British artists. A number of new and exciting works will be going on show, such as Joseph Lewes’ Portative Church, in which he presents a handmade stringed instrument – known as a hurdy-gurdy – built in the shape of a church. As well as taking a look at this somewhat unconventional instrument, visitors are even welcome to strum it themselves. The exhibition also includes such oddities as giant cardboard heads, a crashed car and a ceremonial bowl. Other works include a room sized installation by Ant Macari entitled Ruach HaShem, or ‘Brain of God’. Macari encourages visitors to involve themselves in the artwork by entering the piece through a hole which resembles the silhouette of ‘The Creation of Adam’ by Michelangelo.

Exhibition curator and artist David Steans, who graduated in 2007 from Leeds Metropolitan University and whose work features in the show, said: "Glamourie focuses on shared interests and sympathies rather than an individual theme by overlapping and colliding individual works; approaching the project like an artwork. Glamourie is, by turns, strange, pathetic, obsessive, mordant and morbid."

In regards to Steans himself, Kerry Harker, co-director at PSL, said: "It is fantastic to see him rise to the challenge of this, his biggest curatorial job yet, and also a great opportunity for him as an artist to showcase his work alongside his peers. I urge anyone with a passion for talent and fresh thinking in contemporary art to see this show."

There will also be a series of performances and events organised by artists Chris Bloor and Derek Horton, including one entitled Dark Heart > M1 as a way of bringing Glamourie to life.

The exhibition will take place at Project Space Leeds from 14th January until 31st March.
