When someone says "eco-friendly living" it might be hard not to imagine a commune in the middle of nowhere. However, Greenhouse is aiming to show that you don’t have to give up the joy of living in a buzzing urban environment while also doing your bit to save the planet. And the unique development, situated in Beeston to the south of the city centre, turns one this month.

Formerly known as Shaftesbury House before an extensive renovation, the building combines modern living with sustainable energy. Solar panels and wind turbines help power the building, while waste water and rainwater is collected in basins, before being filtered and recycled throughout the building. Greenhouse also provides residents with plenty of mod-cons: there is a 100MB internet connection, on-site gym, deli and allotments to make green living that little bit easier.

To mark its one-year anniversary, Greenhouse is opening its doors this weekend (Saturday 1st October) to celebrate an ‘Eco–toberfest’ with the local community. Planned events include market stalls in the courtyard and tours behind the scenes to show how energy is saved. Hillary Benn MP, who opened the development last year, will be making a guest appearance to discuss the impact Greenhouse has had on regenerating the local community.

Guests will also be allowed to take a peek into Greenhouse’s apartments, offices and newly opened Apart–hotel. Members of Citu, the developer behind Greenhouse, will be on hand to offer advice to buyers about the FirstBuy scheme they are now involved in, which enables homes to be purchased with just a 5% deposit.

Additionally, and as you might expect from an event named after the world famous German beer festival, ‘Eco-toberfest’ will be providing Oktoberfest style entertainment. There will be Bavarian beer courtesy of Leeds bar the Bierkeller, Bavarian-style food from the Greenhouse deli and a live oompah band.

The occasion is also being used as an opportunity to launch Greenhouse’s latest project, an initiative to grow their own forest, which they will be encouraging visitors at the ‘Eco-toberfest’ to get involved in. Managing director Chris Thompson said: "We thought this would be a really nice way to mark our first birthday, involving Leeds residents and giving people a chance to make their mark in a green way. We’re looking to create a mini Greenhouse forest and wanted to give friends of Greenhouse the chance to have their little piece of history there too.

"Guests can adopt a tree at ‘Eco-toberfest’ which they then take away and grow. When it’s ready it gets sent off to be planted alongside our trees and is cultivated for the next 100 years.”

The Eco-toberfest celebrations will run from 12pm–6pm on Saturday 1st October. The event is open to all, but RSVP is essential for entry. You can find more information and RSVP at www.greenhouseleeds.co.uk/1stbirthday
