We look ahead to some comedy theatre

Preview: Funny Men

A comedy stage play by a Yorkshire writer is being performed in Leeds this fortnight before it heads up to the Edinburgh Fringe later in the year. Funny Men, which Icabod Productions describe as a “witty and poignant” comedy, was written by Bradford playwright Andrew Crowther through the city’s Snowgoose writers’ group.

The play comes with a strong pedigree, after winning at the New Writers Festival and playing to sell-out audiences last year. It’s an exciting time for Crowther, who has written several plays that have already been staged in the Bradford area, including The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and Welcome to Paradise. As well as Leeds’ Carriageworks, Funny Men is also being performed at the Otley Courthouse.

By going to see the play, you’ll be supporting a truly local production. Ben Eagle, who plays the character of Jimmy McGee in Funny Men is a well-known face on the Bradford theatre scene, having performed in a variety of productions ranging from 1984 and Animal Farm to Macbeth and Waiting for Godot. Cast members Martin Knowles and Debra Haigh also have various local productions under their belts, with Haigh having appeared in two other productions that came out of the Snowgoose new writers’ project.
6 March, Otley Courthouse, Courthouse Street, LS21 3AN, 01943 467 466, 7.30pm, £8/£6 (advance), £9/£7 (door)
12-13 March, The Carriageworks Theatre, Millennium Square, LS1 3DA, 0113 224 3801, £8/£6

I had the privilege of acting with Debra in a play called The Single Utamaro, another Snowgoose production that was shown with Funny Men last year.  I saw Funny Men and thoroughly enjoyed it - I can definitely recommend it.
