Young Jazz Stars Pave the Way

Preview: Empirical

With the whole country apparently going ‘X Factor’ crazy, the chance to celebrate some real talent shouldn’t go a miss this month. Leeds College of Music will welcome Empirical, a collective of future jazz stars, who are tipped by Jazzwise to be one of the most important jazz bands in UK history. And there’s no Simon Cowell in sight.

The last few years have already seen this highly talented and exciting young band collect numerous awards, including the 2007 Jazzwise album of the year, the inaugural EBU/European Jazz Competition at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and best ensemble in the 2008 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Proof that talent and determination can rival a good sob story.

The Leeds band will be made up of Jay Phelps on trumpet, Nathaniel Facey on alto saxophone, Tom Farmer on double bass and Shaney Forbes on drums. They draw comparisons to the greats, including Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter and a certain John Coltrane. Their long awaited album, produced by none other than Courtney Pine, showcases their dedication to maintaining the roots of traditional modern jazz, but illustrates a definite finger on the pulse of the contemporary world, and it’s all performed with an abundance of youthful energy.

Refreshing, exciting, and incredibly infectious, the evening will no doubt be far more enjoyable than Cowell could ever imagine.
