Formed in Liverpool in the late seventies, Echo and the Bunnymen have survived their fair share of shake-ups. Two of their members, drummer Pete de Freitas and keyboard player Jake Brockman, have been tragically killed in motorcycle accidents. The line-up has changed too many times to mention, and their inconsistent levels of success led to their total disbanding in the early nineties.
Many will have been turned on to the Merseyside group via film soundtracks such as Pretty in Pink, The Lost Boys and Donnie Darko. Their otherworldly brand of alternative indie with its underlying angst lent itself perfectly to these seminal cult teen movies. It also helped to seriously establish them over the Atlantic. Biggest hits ‘The Back of Love’, ‘The Cutter’ and ‘The Killing Moon’ best demonstrate their sophisticated and haunting melodic rock.
Today, remaining members Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant are going strong, having now functioned as a duo for a decade. They believe latest album The Fountain, released last month, to be “the best one we’ve made, apart from Ocean Rain”.
They arrive at the Academy next month to justify this statement, with a highly-anticipated show which will be sure to preserve their track record for mesmerising live performances.
15 December, The Academy, 7pm, £22.50
