Preview Denys Baptiste
The multi-award winning sax players come to Leeds College of Music
Preview: Denys Baptiste
Described as “an icon of British jazz” by Time Magazine, there are few jazz fans who will fail to recognise the talent that is Denys Baptiste.
A MOBO, BBC Jazz and Mercury Music prize winner, this saxophonist means business, having carved out a successful career as a significant artist and composer on the UK jazz scene.
A graduate of Tomorrow’s Warriors, Denys has played with some seriously all star line ups, including Courtney Pine, Jazz Jamaica Allstars, Gregory Isaacs and The Jazz Warriors.
Most recently however, he has returned to the classic quartet format, with an energetic and eclectic collection of new material which draws from a broad palate, encompassing Caribbean, American and African musical influences.
His exceptional 2004 work, Let Freedom Ring has received endless acclaim from both critics and audiences, and all shows, including those at the North Sea and Berlin Jazz Festival received standing ovations.
Denys will be joined by Andrew McCormack on piano, Gary Crosby on double bass, with Rod Youngs on drums completing the line up.
This performance is certainly one not to be missed, with many audiences claiming Denys Baptiste in concert is one of the best, and most moving, they have ever attended.
