Make a shoebox bedroom with Hayley Louise Goodsell

Mat Collishaw's shoebox

Damien Hirst, Mark Wallinger, Grayson Perry and Ronnie Wood recreated a room from their childhoods inside a shoebox. The results were inventive, original and occasionally, downright disturbing.

Creating a micro-bedroom in a shoebox is very appealing: there doesn’t have to be any clutter, socks on the floor or tiresome hoovering to do. And what’s even better, you get the chance to create the room of your dreams: it could be a replica of your childhood bedroom, a room from a reverie, one from a mysterious photograph or something completely surreal.

The Leeds-based artist Hayley Louise Goodsell is inviting you to create your dream bedroom in her Shoebox Bedrooms workshop on Saturday 14th August. It will take place from 11am to 4pm at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery, Leeds University.

The Shoebox Bedrooms project was inspired by the Shoebox Art exhibition held at Haunch of Venison in London. That exhibition was the brainchild of a very inspiring woman, Camila Batmanghelidjh, a psychotherapist and founder of Kids Company – a charitable organisation that works therapeutically with vulnerable children and young people.

Batmanghelidjh asked several high profile artists – including including Damien Hirst, Mark Wallinger, Grayson Perry and Ronnie Wood – to recreate a room from their childhoods inside a shoebox.

The results were inventive, original and occasionally, downright disturbing. Regardless, they were exhibited and later auctioned off to raise money for the charity. Damien Hirst and Zaha Hadid’s shoeboxes fetched the highest bids, going for £22,000 each, while the Chapman brothers’ shoebox went for £16,500.

Whilst your attempts might not generate such gargantuan sums at auction, you can have fun exploring your imagination and inner worlds. Each completed room in the workshop will be documented and displayed in an online exhibition, where others can visit – and enter into – your curious creations.

The workshop is free, but places are limited. To book, contact Hayley Louise Goodsell on hayley@hayleylouisegoodsell.com

The resulting shoeboxes will be photographed and manipulated as 3-d objects to go on our site in Second Life, on the ‘Education UK’ island. This means visitors worldwide can use their online avatars to visit and investigate the artworks…a special twist for Hayley’s workshop!
