When it comes to Christmas, some things will never go out of fashion. In some cases, that’s a problem - oh look, Noddy Holder’s appearing in an advert again! - but sometimes that longevity is warranted. That’s very much the case with Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet The Nutcracker, which has just pirouetted back into Leeds Grand Theatre.

The classic yuletide story sees young Clara playing with her wooden nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve only for it to magically transform into a living soldier. There follows a courageous battle against the Mouse King, a visit to the Land of the Sugarplum Fairy, a parade of dancing confectionary, and lots of leaping about and twirling, as is the ballet dancers’ wont.

The story is accompanied, of course, by Tchaikovsky’s classic score and some lush set designs but, for many, the real attraction of the show will be the Northern Ballet Theatre’s graceful yet energetic performance.

All in all, it should be an enchanting evening for families of all sizes and children of all ages. Well, except for most of the boys.
17 to 31 December, Grand Theatre and Opera House.
