Preview Compassionate Dictatorship
The jazz quartet call into The Venue
With The Venue’s spring line up now in print, the opportunity to hear some of the finest jazz, contemporary and world music, should not be missed. A strong alumni theme is apparent, but why not? If you’ve got it, flaunt it - or so they say.
Described by Jazzwise magazine as “catching the current wave of British jazz”, Compassionate Dictatorship will ignite the season’s jazz performances, when they take to the stage on 4th February. Born out of a collaboration between guitarist Jez Franks and saxophonist Tori Freestone, the quartet is completed by Julie Walkington on double bass, and Ben Reynolds on drums.
All in demand musicians, their lists of credits include diverse artists such as the Creative Jazz Orchestra and F-ire Collective, to Gerard Presencer and Seb Rochford.
Franks and Freestone have been playing and writing together since 1993, with performances including the London Jazz Festival and Staffordshire International Guitar Festival, among various other UK tours. Led by sax and guitar, the quartet perform original material, drawing upon a varied and eclectic pallet to include folk, free and contemporary jazz. Interesting harmonic frameworks and varied meters will keep you on the edge of your seat, as four unique voices are fused into one.
Fresh, exciting, intelligent and sophisticated - Compassionate Dictatorship are a concoction of textures and sounds, set to create a highly enjoyable evening.
The quartet’s new album, Cash Cow, is due for release in early 2008.
