The HiFi Club is one of the gems of the Leeds nightlife scene, providing an intimate venue for live music gigs, club nights and stand-up. It’s one of the most welcoming night spots in the city and it hosts an eclectic roster of entertainment throughout the week, helping it to attract a diverse and friendly crowd. Every Saturday evening it’s comedy night, when you get to see performances by three comedians and, as an added bonus, all ticket holders are entitled to stay in the venue for the Boogaloo club night after the comedy has finished. So you can laugh, drink, chat and dance all in one venue, all in one night. Now you can’t say fairer than that.
But of course, any comedy night is only as good as the comics who are performing. And we’re pleased to say that the HiFi Club regularly attracts some of the finest exponents of the trade, made all the more special by the fact that it’s a relatively small but perfectly formed venue, making for a fantastic atmosphere.
So far so good, but who can you see this fortnight? On Saturday 4th September you have Anvil Springsteen, Roger Monkhouse and Barry Dodds. Liverpool-born Springsteen is a veteran of the comedy circuit, so you can be sure you’re in the hands of a seasoned pro. He also has a rich vein of material to work from, having worked seemingly every job under the sun before trying his hand at comedy. Then it’s Monkhouse, who is no relation to the late Bob, although like his namesake he has an impressive ability to reel off some finely tuned gags, and he can deliver some extremely well observed material. Finally, the likeable Leeds-based Geordie Barry Dodds is a fine live act who is growing in stature with each performance, who again provides some cracking down-to-earth musings on daily life.
A week later on Saturday 11th September, it’s John Scott, Eddy Brimson and Dave Twentyman, and again you should be guaranteed plenty of laughs. Scott is a circuit and festivals regular who mixes charm with razor sharp wit in equal measure. The talented Brimson is also a familiar face on the stand-up circuit and has made a name for himself as an author, radio presenter and actor. Finally, the cheeky Twentyman delivers a chatty, apparently semi-improvised style of stand-up that manages to charm even the most resistant of audiences.
So it should be two very enjoyable gigs this fortnight. But just watch out: doors open at 7pm (the first comic is on stage at 7.45pm) and it’s strictly first come first served, so if you don’t buy your tickets in advance or arrive in good time, you risk missing out. And that wouldn’t be funny.
Every Saturday at 7pm, The HiFi Club, 7pm, £9-£12
