Preview: Chapel Allerton Jazz
We kid you not; there have been a few sightings of jazz tumbleweed blowing past the Leeds Guide offices this summer (if you can even call it summer). But finally, we can now welcome you open armed, into a brand spanking new season of jazz.
As promised in last weeks’ preview, Leeds jazz, at the very least will not disappoint, and at the very most it will make you ruin your best jeans with excitement. September offers more gigs than you can shake a double bass at and as a result of this we have two tip top recommendations for you.
First off we have Chapel Allerton Festival’s Jazz Sunday on 5th September that will feature some of the area’s most prominent jazz talent, including the high energy, elaborate arrangements of The Magic Hat Ensemble and Richard Ormrod, who gives Coltrane the dub treatment in ‘A Dread Supreme’.
On an open-air stage with The Regent pub next door you have no excuse but to get yourself down and for only £3 you’d be a fool to miss out.
Next up tenor player Mike Hope will be playing at Seven Arts with his quartet on Sept 12th featuring Al McSween on piano, Steve Crocker on double bass and Caroline Boaden on Drums. Mike has played with some of the best jazz musicians in the country and here is a chance to see him the intimate settings of Seven Arts, what more can we say, you need to be there.
