Cancer Research UK and Tesco are inviting Leeds and Huddersfield residents to participate in 10K runs happening this October. Funds raised through the marathons will go directly to Cancer Research UK, a charity dedicated to finding new ways to beat cancer through prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The fundraising events are only two of Cancer Research UK’s 22 runs happening across the country this September and October. In total, the charity is hoping over 50,000 men and women throughout the UK join together to raise £5 million to aid their cause – which is similar to the amount raised last year.
Even if fundraising isn’t your forte, keep in mind that a mere £10 raised for Cancer Research UK could buy 300 glass slides for studying cells and tumour samples under the microscope-an essential part of their research. Ten times that would cover the costs of one woman’s trial test of a new method of hormone therapy to improve the treatment of breast cancer.
So when you think about it, getting sponsored and running a 10k marathon is well worth the struggle. With adequate preparation and motivation, you’ll cross the finish line knowing you’ve helped raise vital funds to help the UK win its battle against cancer.
To get involved, sign up online to run in Leeds’ 10K run at Harewood House on Sunday 31st October; or if Huddersfield is more local, at St George’s Square on Sunday 17th October. Get your mates involved too regardless of their level of athleticism (or lack of) and show support for this worthwhile event that’ll give you a thorough workout and a huge sense of achievement!
