When you think of Northern Ballet Theatre, most likely to come to mind is one of their big set, grand costume, blow-out productions; Dracula, The Three Musketeers, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the like. But last year saw the 40 year old Leeds company celebrate with two mixed programmes, pieces from which join new works in As Time Goes By, appearing at the Grand from 23rd to 25th February. Spring saw several short pieces premiered, including Mark Godden’s ‘Angels in the Architecture’, while December’s gala evening saw NBT artistic director David Nixon’s high energy ‘Powerhouse Rhumba’ and Wayne McGregor’s incredible solo ‘Ossein’ wow the audience.
Added to the above, we can look forward to NBT ballet mistress Yoko Ichino’s staging of Petipa’s world famous ‘Grand Pas De Deux’ from Don Quixote and ballet master Daniel de Andrade premieres ‘Glass Canon’, set to music by Scottish musicians Moishe’s Bagel.
Title piece ‘As Time Goes By’ looks set to be an exciting foray into the timeless world of classic glamour and super-stylish choreography. Dancers turn out in dinner jackets and evening gowns, while Leeds jazz success Peter Grant provides the live soundtrack alongside the NBT’s exquisite orchestra.
If all this has whet your appetite for one of those full productions NBT do so well, there’s Romeo & Juliet at the Grand too, from 27th February to 6th March. An enduring favourite from late NBT artistic director Christopher Gable’s repertoire, the Shakespeare classic is a must-see this fortnight: watch out for Lez Brotherston’s cat and bird inspired costumes differentiating the Capulets and Montagues.
